Dollar Menu Romance

Commercials often reflect real life, sometimes too closely, in order to sell a particular product. McDonald's most recent commercial selling the virtues of their Dollar menu is such a ad. A guy is interested in an attractive neighbor, but he doesn't know how to start a conversation. He tries numerous times, but fails. Luckily he finds the one gorgeous girl in the world that has more than a passing interest in McDonald's Dollar Menu. He brings up the subject and magically she begins to talk to him... about hash browns, sausage Mcmuffins, and piping hot coffee I'm sure. The door is now open for him to ask her out on a date. Most likely to a nice restaurant to no doubt continue their McDonald's conversation.

Maybe the guy in the commercial just wants to get laid. But perhaps he really wants a connection, a meaningful moment in his day where he can reflect and take a breath in amazement at the sight of a beautiful woman... to experience the unspeakable moment of tranquility and connection through the ether. A real moment in an otherwise unbearable world. A moment where he's not judged, just loved. A moment where he doesn't feel so alone. A moment to bask in is all that he's asking for, what any of us are really asking for.

The commercial ends with another attempt at connection, a joking reference to a song playing in an elevator perhaps becoming "their" song. Inside that statement is a longing to someday tell his children how the Muzak version of "La Bamba" became "their" song. How the first thing he could think of to say was something stupid about a "Dollar Menu," when you could get a burger for that price.

Below the surface, this commercial showcases the lengths a man has to travel to make a meaningful connection with a woman. A trip from banality to passion. What we're all trying to find is that moment when nothing need be said between two people--the inutterable moment where words aren't required. It's a quiet moment filled with a common history, a quiet respect, and a mutual understanding. If that moment where a precious metal the price would dwarf platinum. So the lonely continue to search for a moment to mention a little something innocuous in order to get the ball rolling.

"Did you hear about the Dollar Menu at McDonald's?"

"No?"

"Well, ah.. ah.. wanna go out sometime?"
